About Sophie Howard

Sophie has been making sculpture since the 1970s, and studied in Winchester. Having continued to make and teach art alongside other jobs, having a family and moving house a few times she now works full time at sculpture. Sophie lives in Bristol, producing her own pieces. She also works for private customers and garden companies.

‘It always feels as if the next piece will be really good, the excitement of playing with the forms never goes away. Ideas breed like rabbits. Mostly these days I make bodies. People are so varied, and the human form always fascinating. I could get arrested for staring.'

All the terracotta pieces are made in collaboration with the Bristol potter Rupert Blamire. The ceramic pieces are pressed from a plaster mould, made from Sophie's original designs. After firing, each piece is smoked over sawdust, waxed and polished.
